காவிரி நதியான எனக்கு பொன்னி என்றும் மற்றொரு பெயர் உண்டு. போன் போன்ற நெற்கதிர்களை விளைவிப்பதால் என்னை பொன்னின்னதி என்று போற்றுகிறார்கள். அக்காலத்தில் அகத்திய முனி தவம் செய்தபோது அவரது கமண்டலத்தை காக உருவத்தில் வந்த விநாயகப்பெருமான் தட்டி விட, நான் விரிந்து பரந்த ஆறாக ஓட ஆரம்பித்தேன். காகம் விரித்த காரணத்தால் காவிரி என்று எனக்குப் பெயர் வந்ததாக சுவையான கதை கூறுகிறது.
எனது தாய் நாடு கர்நாடக மாநிலம். அங்குள்ள குடகு மலையில் நான் பிறக்கிறேன். நான் முதன்முதலில் தோன்றும் இடத்திற்கு தலைக் காவிரி என்று பெயர். நான் பாயத் தொடங்கி சில தூரம் சென்ற உடனேயே அண்மித்து கிருஷ்ணராஜ சாகர் என்ற அணை கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது.
தமிழகத்தில் சேலம் மாவட்டத்தில் என்மீது கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள அணையின் பெயர் மேட்டூர் அணை. இந்த அணையைக் கடந்த பின்னர் பவனி நொய்யல் என்ற இரு ஆறுகள் என்னுடன் சேருகின்றன. திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் என்மீது கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள அணையின் பெயர் கல்லணை. கரிகால சோழனால் கட்டப்பட்ட மிகப் பழமையான இந்த அணை இன்றும் மிக உறுதியாக இருக்கிறது. இதன் பிறகு குடந்தை, திருவையாறு, மயிலாடுதுறை வழியாகப் பாய்ந்து வங்கக் கடலில் என் பயணத்தை முடிக்கிறேன்.
கர்நாடகம் எனது தாய் வீடு. தமிழ்நாடு நான் புகுந்த வீடு. இந்த இரு நாடுகளும் எனது இரு கண்கள். நான் இந்த இரு மாநிலத்தின் வயல்களிலும் பசுமைப் புரட்சியை செய்து விவசாயம் தழைக்க செய்கிறேன். என்னை தூய்மையாக வைத்து, எனது நிறை முறையாகப் பயன்படுத்தி இந்த இரு மாநிலத்தவரும் சண்டை சச்சரவு இன்றி வளமோடு வாழ வாழ்த்துகிறேன்.

Kaviri River is so very well merged with the life and culture of people in Tamil Nadu. Kaviri river has converted the Tamil soil into fertile fields nurturing the crops and sustaining the livelihood of people and farmers. In this essay let us listen to the story narrated by the river Kaviri.
I am River Kaviri. I am also called as Ponni River. I am called as Ponni since I grow paddy crops golden in color. (Pon means gold in Tamil). Once upon a time, sage Agastya was meditating. During that time, Lord Ganesh disguised in the form of crow tilted his hand pot containing water. Hence, I started flowing into a river. Since a crow caused my flow, I came to be called as Kaviri (‘Ka’ means crow in tamil and ‘viri’ means spreading). This is an interesting story describing my origin.
My Motherland is Karnataka state. I am born on the Kudagu hills of Karnataka. The place of my origin is called Thalai Kaviri. In Karnataka, a huge dam is constructed across my flow named as Krishnaraja Sagar.
In Tamil Nadu, a dam is constructed across me known as Mettur Dam. Once I cross this dam, two rivers namely Bhavani and Noyyal join me. In the district of Trichy, a dam was constructed on me long ago by King Karikala Cholan. Such an old dam stands well into full function without any damage to this day. After crossing this dam, I flow through Kumbakonam, Thiruvaiyaru, and Mayiladuthurai and finally empty my waters in the Bay of Bengal sea.
Karnataka is my motherland. Tamil Nadu is my in-law’s house. These two states are like my two eyes. In these two states, I achieve green revolution and make agriculture prosper. Please keep me clean and use my waters in the right way. I beg that the people of both these states do not quarrel over me. I also pray for your prosperity and happy lives.
