மனிதனை சமூகப்பிராணி என்று கூறுகிறார்கள். இதன் பொருள் என்னவென்றால் மனிதர்கள் பிற மனிதர்களோடு சேர்ந்து குழுவாக வாழும் தன்மையுடையவர்கள் என்பதுதான். நமது சமுதாய அமைப்பைப் பார்த்தால் இது நன்கு விளங்கும். ஒரு நாடு மாநிலங்களாகவும், மாவட்டங்களாகவும், ஊர்களாகவும் நிர்வாகக் காரணங்களுக்காகப் பிரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. ஒவ்வொரு ஊரிலும் தெருக்கள் உள்ளன, தெருக்களில் வீடுகள் உள்ளன. ஆக ஒரு வீட்டில் உள்ள குடும்பம்தான் சமுதாயத்தின் ஒரு முதல் நிலை அங்கம் என்று கொள்ளலாம்.
குடும்பம் என்பது திருமணத்தினால் இணைந்த கணவனும் மனைவியும் சேர்ந்து ஏற்படுத்தும் ஒரு சமூக அமைப்பு. அவர்களுக்குப் பிள்ளைகள் உண்டாகும்போது குடும்பம் வளர்கிறது. குடும்பத்தில் உள்ள அங்கத்தினர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையைப் பொறுத்து ஒரு குடும்பம் சிறிதாகவோ பெரிதாகவோ இருக்கக்கூடும். இரண்டு வகையான குடும்பங்கள் உள்ளன. அவை கூட்டுக் குடும்பம், மற்றும் தனிக்குடும்பம் என்பவையே. கூட்டுக் குடும்பத்தில் ஒன்றுக்கு மேற்பட்ட திருமணமான சகோதரர்கள் தமது தாய் தந்தையரோடு சேர்ந்து வாழுகின்றனர். தனிக் குடும்பத்தில் கணவன், மனைவி மற்றும் அவர்களது மணமாகாத பிள்ளைகள் மட்டுமே வாழ்கின்றனர்.
அக்காலத்தில் கூட்டுக் குடும்பங்கள் அதிக எண்ணிக்கையில் இருந்தன. ஆனால் இன்றோ தனிக் குடும்பங்கள் பெருகி விட்டன. இந்த இரண்டு குடும்ப அமைப்புகளிலும் சாதக பாதகங்கள் உள்ளன.
ஒரு குடும்பம் சிறப்பாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றால் அங்கத்தினர்கள் ஒற்றுமை மற்றும் தியாக சிந்தனைகளால் ஒன்று பட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். ஒரு குடும்பத்தில் கருத்து வேறுபாடுகள் வருவது இயற்கைதான். ஆயினும் உண்மையான அன்பு மேலோங்கும்போது ஒருவருக்கொருவர் விட்டுக்கொடுக்க முனைகின்றனர். இதனால் குடும்பத்தில் அன்பும், ஒற்றுமையும் மேலோங்கும்.
குடும்பம் என்ற அமைப்பு நமது வாழ்க்கையை எளிதாக்குகிறது. ஒரு குடும்பத்தில் அங்கத்தினர்கள் வேலைகளையும், பொறுப்புகளையும், கடமைகளையும் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வதால் நாம் சுலபமாக வாழ முடிகிறது. மேலும், ஒரு குடும்பத்தில் அங்கத்தினர்களுக்கிடையே அன்பு, பாசம், ஆகிய உணர்வுகள் வாழ்க்கைக்கு ஒரு புதிய பொருளைக் கொடுத்து வாழ்க்கையை செம்மைப் படுத்துகின்றன.
குடும்பம் என்பது மனித சமுதாயத்திற்கு புதிதல்ல. பற்பல நூறாண்டுகளாக மனிதர்கள் குடும்பம் குடும்பமாக வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார்கள். ஒரு குடும்பம் சிறந்தோங்க தேவையான காரணிகளை நாம் புரிந்துகொள்ளும் பொது, குடும்பத்தில் அமைதியும் செழிப்பும் ஓங்கும்.

Man is called Social Animal. It means man is inclined to live in groups in the society. If we look at the structure of our society, we can understand this concept. A country is segmented into states, districts, towns and villages for administrative reasons. In every town or village we find streets and in every streets there are houses. The family inhabiting a home is the basic unit of a society.
A family is created by a man and woman brought together by marriage. When they get children, the family grows. Depending on the number of members in the family, a family can be small or big. There are two kinds of families, namely joint family and nuclear family. In a joint family, a few married brothers live along with their parents. In a nuclear family there is only one couple along with their unmarried children.
During those days, there were many joint families. These days, the number of nuclear families have grown. There are advantages and disadvantages in both these types of families.
For the welfare of a family, it is necessary that the members of the family are united by feelings of unity and sacrifice. It is natural to see differences of opinions in families. However, when the members are united by true love, they tend to act in the interest of others ultimately resulting in the happiness of the family.
The family system makes our lives easier. The members of a family share the duties, responsibilities and tasks in a family. Therefore, we are able to live comfortably. Also, the feelings of love, mutual respect and affection between the family members make a family a wonderful place to live in.
The family system is not new to humans. For several centuries, people have been living in families. If we can understand the factors that give way to the welfare of a family system, families will be ruled by peace and happiness.
