நூல் என்றால் புத்தகம் என்றும், அகம் என்றால் வீடு என்றும் பொருள் படும். நூலகம் என்பதற்கு புத்தகங்களின் வீடு என்பது பொருள். நூலகம் மனிதனின் அறிவு வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான சாளரம். நாம் ஓரளவிற்குத்தான் புத்தகங்களை வாங்க இயலும், அதற்கு மேல் நமது அறிவினை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ள ஏற்ற இடம் நூலகமே. ஒவ்வொரு ஊரிலும் அரசின் நூலகங்கள் உள்ளன. பல கிராமங்களில் கூட நூலகங்கள் செயல்படுகின்றன.
