Mirza-Sahiba by Peelu
“Recently, I have been reading a lot about ‘Kissa Kaav/ਕਿੱਸਾ ਕਾਵਿ ’ and feel like sharing my views with you all. This time I have chosen my favorite “ Mirza-Sahiba/ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਂ ”.
Mirza Sahiba is a very famous ballad. Many great personalities have written it but the most recognized is the one written by ‘Peelu/ਪੀਲੂ’
“ਇਹ ਕਿੱਸਾ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਪੀਲੂ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਨੇ
ਜਿਹਨੂੰ ਜਾਣੇ ਜੱਗ ਜਹਾਨ”
Unlike other love stories in Punjabi ‘Sahit/ਸਾਹਿਤ’, Sahiba, the heroine of the epic betrays her lover Mirza, the hero. Maybe, this is the reason that Mirza-Sahiba has not received the status; like Waris Sahh’s ‘Heer/ਹੀਰ’ ; as it must have got.
“ਮੰਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੁਨ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਂ, ਮੇਰਾ ਤਰਕਸ਼ ਟੰਗਿਆ ਜੰਡ,
ਤਿੰਨ ਸੌ ਕਾਨੀ ਮਿਰਜ਼ੇ ਜੁਆਨ ਦੀ, ਦਿੰਦਾ ਸਿਆਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੰਡ”
“ਹੋਣੀ ਮਿਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਕੁੱਦ ਪਈ, ਰਲੀ ਸਿਆਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ,
ਛੁੱਟੀ ਕਾਨੀ ਗਜ਼ਬ ਦੀ, ਲੈ ਗਈ ਮਿਰਜ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ,
ਰੂਹ ਮਿਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਨਿਕਲ ਗਈ , ਲੱਗੀ ਜੰਡੋਰੇ ਨਾਲ,
ਮੰਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਈ ਸਹਿਬਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਰਲ ਗਈ ਸਿਆਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ”
Basically, being a love story, Mirza-Sahiba is a satire on the social restrictions which existed then and even now.
Well, my point of view about Mirza-Sahiba is a bit different from others. Mostly Sahiba is considered to be guilty but according to me, she wasn’t.
Yes, she did something wrong but if she had not placed those arrows and the bow on the tree or if Mirza had not decided to rest then also they must have been killed.
In my opinion it is just written to exaggerate Mirza’s bravery. He says,
“ਪਹਿਲੋਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਵੀਰ ਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਦੇ, ਦੂਜੀ ਕੁਲੇ ਦੀ ਤੰਗ,
ਤੀਜੀ ਮਾਰਾਂ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ, ਜੈਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੰਗ”
This shows his overconfidence on his bravery that resulted fatal.
“ਮਿਰਜ਼ੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੜਾ ਗੁਮਾਨ ਥਾ, ਫਿਰ ਸੌਂ ਗਿਆ ਜੰਡੋਰੇ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ,
ਮੈਂ ਵਲ ਵਲ ਵੰਡ ਦੂੰਗਾ ਸੂਰਮੇ, ਦੇਉਂਗਾ ਪੂਰ ਖਪਾ”
“ਦਸ ਮਹੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਘਿਉ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਬੱਕੀ ਦੇ ਢਿੱਡ ਪਾ,
ਬੱਕੀ ਤੋਂ ਡਰਨ ਫਰੇਸ਼ਤੇ, ਤੇ ਮੈਥੋਂ ਡਰੇ ਖੁਦਾ”
I say that Mirza was a braggart. Just imagine the situation, a guy and a girl eloped to get married and the girl’s family and her fiancé were following them. The result was quite obvious and that was what happened.
Here I would also like to tell that it is in accordance with Peelu’s Mirza-Sahiba that Sahiba betrayed him. According to ‘Hafiz Barkhudar’/‘ਹਾਫ਼ਿਜ਼ ਬਰਖੁਦਾਰ’, ‘Shameer/ਸ਼ਮੀਰ ‘ (Sahiba’s brother) killed both of them when they were hiding themselves. The reason that Sahiba is considered to be a guilty is that Peelu’s Mirza is more famous than any other.
“ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਮੁਲਕੁਲਮੌਤ ਦਾ, ਕੁਛ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਗੁਮਾਨ,
ਵਿੱਚ ਕਬਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਪ ਗਿਆ, ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਜਵਾਨ”
HEY I DIDN”T GET UR MSG.. rEGARDINg THE……… BALLAD……
if Mirza was boastful then why did sahiba ran out wid him n then broke all the arrows?????……… The Poet……. “Peelu” had claimed that sahiba betrayed mirza….. nd even he had put in to his story that…. mirza-“the handsome” was vry powerful and smart…… and all knew that no one can beat him…….. still he died only B-coz of his beloved!!!!!

That is what I said, it is according to Peelu only that she broke his arrows. According to ਹਾਫ਼ਿਜ਼ ਬਰਖੁਦਾਰ, she did not break those arrows or the bow, they were hiding when they were killed. I said that Peelu’s ballad is to exaggerate his bravery. No doubt he was a brave but I adressed him a braggat because he could have waited for his brothers to come.
